A dedicated server is a computer that executes operations at the request of other computers. The server is a function assigned to a machine. With a dedicated server, you benefit from all the resources and power of the machine to carry out your projects. The dedicated server can be physical (Bare-Metal) or virtual (VPS).
Renting a dedicated server is very simple. All you have to do is take out a subscription with a professional hosting company like IKOULA and you will have a machine that is entirely dedicated to you. There are all types of dedicated servers, from ultra high-performance servers to small servers enabling you to carry out limited tasks. It is therefore very important to know your needs before choosing your server.
To choose your dedicated server, you need to know your requirements. Server performance is generally measured in terms of the following resources. Firstly, the processor, whose power is measured in Giga Hertz (GHz), number of cores or threads.
Then memory or RAM, measured in Gigabytes (GB) and storage, also measured in GB or Terabytes (TB). Several storage technologies exist (several types of hard disks), such as SATA hard disk, SSD hard disk or NVMe.
Finally, the server can be fitted with a graphics card, which will be needed above all to meet the needs of intensive computing operations or image or video processing.

To install a dedicated server, first identify your needs. Choose the operating system (OS) that suits you best. Unlike a dedicated server, which allocates its resources to a single user, shared hosting allows this pool of resources to be divided between several users. This means that users who don't need all the resources can benefit from a more affordable solution for setting up small projects. However, there are also disadvantages: you may be affected by the actions of other users of the same server.
In the case of the Cloud, as with VPS, we are talking about virtual machines. Using a hypervisor, several virtual machines are created on a single virtual server. Unlike a physical server, the Cloud offers greater scalability and flexibility because resources can be adjusted on demand.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. As the name suggests, it's a virtual private server, so you can take full advantage of the machine's resources. In practical terms, virtualization is the division of physical machines into several virtual machines that are clearly partitioned and isolated from each other. The VPS therefore offers the same guarantees as a physical dedicated server, but with greater flexibility. It's more or less the first building block of the Cloud.
